What Was the Systeum Meetup 2023 Like: Artificial Intelligence in Practice

On Thursday, October 12, 2023, in the beautiful Worklounge Karlín premises, we organized a meetup titled Artificial Intelligence in Practice, attended by many enthusiasts and experts from the general public. We started the meeting with a delightful breakfast and networking, setting the mood for a discussion on artificial intelligence. The whole event was hosted by the founder and CEO of Systeum, Martin Smětala, who discussed various aspects of this innovative technology with the guests.

Vadim Petrov
Artificial Intelligence in Game Development

Vadim Petrov, who specializes in AI programming at Warhorse Studios, explained how AI is being used in game development.

On the topic of model training and its updates, Vadim said that it's a complex process, in which Warhorse Studio collaborates with an external company. If imperfections arise in the outputs, they work together to resolve them and make the necessary adjustments.

Regarding the use of AI in controlling NPC behavior, Vadim pointed out that they are not yet ready to fully entrust decision-making to artificial intelligence, especially in open worlds with many possibilities.

When asked about tracking AI projects in the realm of NPCs, like Inworld for example, Vadim confirmed that he follows these projects and finds them interesting. However, he emphasized that currently, especially due to issues with AI hallucinations, he finds it hard to imagine using AI for NPCs. Nevertheless, he believes that in the future it could be possible and very intriguing.

Asked if AI can control individual bots in games with autonomous behavior without the original programming, Vadim responded affirmatively. He pointed out that such bots already exist and can simulate independent behavior, although they are not usually labeled as artificial intelligence. He anticipates more advanced versions of these bots in the future.

Regarding the possibility of using AI in game testing, Vadim confirmed that AI-based game testing is a growing field today and he believes there is great potential in it. However, at present, AI in the gaming sector is more focused on voiceovers and working with text for game characters.

Vadim mentioned that the gaming industry is already using AI tools that can generate graphical elements that can be used in character creation and textures. However, he finds this approach very complicated due to copyright issues. There was a recent instance where Valve limited games on its platform that used too much graphics and other artistic elements generated by AI, due to copyright concerns.

On the question of who might lose their job due to AI, Vadim noted that currently, it could be problematic for voice actors and copywriters. However, he believes that with every new revolutionary technology, new opportunities arise. Even if some professions disappear, new, more creative and interesting ones will emerge.

We concluded our discussion with Vadim with a question about whether he ever used music composed by his grandfather, Vadim Petrov, in games. Vadim smiled and said that they haven't used his grandfather's music yet. However, they have used music generated by artificial intelligence, crafted in a specific pre-defined style.

Kateřina Lesch
Machine Analysis of Emotions

We discussed the possibilities of machine analysis of emotions with Kateřina Lesch, Senior Manager in Data Analytics and Artificial Intelligence at Deloitte.

Kateřina pointed out how artificial intelligence can be used in various areas, including online interviews, interrogations, or call centers, where it can recognize the emotional state based on the caller's voice tone. It can then provide a relevant scenario for the operator on the other end, for example, a customer calling just for complaints. However, this use of artificial intelligence can also lead to client frustration if the AI does not adequately understand their demands or needs. Voice AI is also looking into how the human voice will sound later in age, encompassing research in the field of AI and vocal cords. This area is also welcomed by doctors.

Kateřina, however, emphasized that she prefers the human approach and communication between people, which is more accurate. She also stated that there are still challenges in recognizing sarcasm and irony. Artificial intelligence does not have the ability to perceive context and sounds as humans can, but she believes this technology will continue to evolve.

In response to a question about the ethics of analyzing emotions from biometric data and using this information without client consent, Kateřina stressed that it's completely unethical to collect biometric data without consent. However, she pointed out that it happens. Kateřina confirmed that she always informs clients when they are speaking to AI, especially in the initial phase of a call or chat.

In response to a question about how semantic text analysis using AI varies across sectors, Kateřina gave the example of working with AI in forensic investigations, where various texts are analyzed to determine if they are truthful or deceptive.

Kateřina emphasized that AI is becoming an increasingly significant part of our everyday lives and work environment. An essential element is the automation of routine tasks, such as filtering emails and organizing data, which can free up time for more critical tasks. AI also enables Predictive Analytics, improving the decision-making process based on data analysis. AI-driven chatbots can assist with communication and query processing.

Tomáš Horáček
AI and Law: Joys and Challenges with Prompts and Outputs in AI Tools

Tomáš Horáček specializes in IT law and assists start-ups in the fields of law, technology, and marketing. During his presentation, he introduced the challenges and benefits associated with using AI in the legal and online world.

Tomáš immediately addressed several questions concerning the legal and ethical aspects of using AI tools. Regarding the use of a prompt by someone else and presenting it as their own, Tomáš stated that if the said prompt remained unchanged and someone used it for commercial purposes, this action might be legally enforceable. However, he emphasized that the burden of proof applies in law, and everything depends on the specific circumstances and details.

Regarding the possibility of classifying data used in AI tools and the question of ensuring sensitive data is used only internally, Tomáš mentioned that paid AI tools offer some data anonymization and guarantee that the data will not be shared with third parties. However, he noted that no one could verify this guarantee.

In response to whether it would be possible to sue OpenAI in case sensitive data from input/output was disclosed to a third party, Tomáš recommended that people read the terms of the agreement they accepted when creating an account with OpenAI. According to these terms, suing would not be possible if users used sensitive data in the prompt and did not use a paid premium account.

Tomáš also focused on trust and ethics when working with AI. He underscored the importance of admitting to clients that they are communicating with AI and utilizing it in their creations. Ideally, this should be codified in the contract. He also emphasized that copying ideas from AI tools does not automatically mean creating one's work; it's essential to incorporate one's thoughts and adjust the text or code as needed. He also remarked that current paid versions of AI tools are probably less legally vulnerable.

Michal Kučera
How Work is Changing Due to AI

Michal Kučera, Product Owner at Czechitas, shared his experiences using artificial intelligence in everyday life.

He most frequently uses premium accounts from ChatGPT, Midjourney, and Stable Diffusion, especially for preparing presentations and evaluating surveys, which he then intelligently summarizes. This saves him a lot of time. For instance, he used to spend hours processing a lengthy Excel file with questions after completing a course. Thanks to AI, he can now significantly simplify this process and save time that he can allocate to other tasks. Another use of AI in his work is managing emails after returning from vacation, which can be challenging due to the large volume of messages. AI assists him in sorting emails based on their importance, thus streamlining the communication organization process.

Regarding future work habits and competitiveness, Michal emphasized the importance of the ability to critically assess the credibility of messages generated by AI. He pointed out that AI can produce false information, so it's vital to distinguish between reality and fiction. He considers this ability crucial in an era where AI can produce information that looks true but isn't.

When asked about hallucinations in ChatGPT, Michal confirmed that he had encountered them, which is a common trait of generative AIs. However, he pointed out that proper prompting (prompt engineering) can reduce the risk of hallucinations. He also mentioned that it helps to often praise ChatGPT :)

Additionally, he noted that while some job positions might disappear due to automation and AI, new positions are emerging that don't yet have clear titles. This points to the dynamic shifts in the job market.

Lastly, he presented an example of how AI can enable workers to devote more time to other, often more important, tasks. He chose the example of an assistant at a dentist's office where AI replaced the nurse, transcribing the dentist's spoken word into the patient's record and distinguishing key information from filler words and sounds. The actual nurse then had more time for other tasks and, more importantly, for the patients.

Michal, along with Czechitas, plans courses in the field of GenAI for the general public, which will cover basic prompt engineering and an explanation of how generative AI functions. With this course, he hopes to help people navigate this area more effectively.
